Dallas, Texas – The Texas Latino Comic Con 2025 kicked off Saturday August 9th, with an electrifying blend of culture, creativity, and high-flying action, proving once again why it’s a cornerstone event for fans of Latino comics, art, and the timeless tradition of lucha libre. Held in the heart of Dallas, this year’s convention celebrated the vibrant intersection of pop culture and Mexican wrestling heritage, drawing enthusiasts from far and wide to panels, artist meetups, and unforgettable in-ring drama.
The festivities began on a high note when renowned mascaredo and collector of lucha libre masks, Mario Flores, presented a custom Texas Latino Comic Con mask to founder Hector Rodriguez. This heartfelt gesture honored Rodriguez’s tireless contributions to uplifting lucha libre in Dallas, Texas, setting a tone of appreciation and excitement for the day ahead. Attendees flocked to engaging panels and mingled with talented artists hailing from across the Lone Star State, immersing themselves in discussions on Latino representation in comics and beyond.
Adding to the star power was the presence of DTown Lucha Libre rudo Champion, Kalel “El Chapin” Santana, who was specially invited and made his mark throughout the event. Accompanied by his slick manager “Don Money” and the imposing Amazonian security detail known as “La Seguridad,” El Chapin didn’t just observe—he disrupted. The rudo trio crashed the Primo’s Podcast show and even interrupted Kevin Gracia’s (the writer behind Masked Republic’s Dragon Lee) panel on Professor Aldama’s insightful book, From Cocinas to Lucha Libre Ringsides. These bold interruptions built tension, foreshadowing the chaos to come.
The convention built to a fever pitch with the highly anticipated main event: an epic clash between the defending rudo Champion Bengali and the beloved fan-favorite técnico, Aski El Guerrero Maya. This rubber match promised an undisputed winner, and it delivered in spades. Against all odds, the underdog Aski overcame the towering Bengali in a display of skill, heart, and aerial prowess that had the crowd roaring in approval.
Aski’s joyful celebration was short-lived, however, as El Chapin stormed in, demanding a shot at the Texas Latino Comic Con Championship. Aski firmly shot him down, insisting that El Chapin needed to wait his turn and lacked the authority to call matches. Unfazed, El Chapin retorted that while he might not have the power, he knew someone who did. Enter Don Money, striding out with La Seguridad amid a chorus of boos from the crowd. In a shocking revelation, Don Money declared himself the owner of Texas Latino Comic Con, asserting that he called the shots.
Wasting no time, Don Money paid off and excused the referee, then announced an impromptu championship match between the battle-worn Aski and El Chapin— with himself as the special guest referee. Raising the stakes even higher, he put Kalel’s DTown Lucha Libre Championship on the line as well. Despite expressing confidence in his charge, Don Money’s words left a visibly worrisome Kalel on edge.
What followed was an intense 10-minute lucha bout filled with flips, submissions, and controversy. Thanks to Don Money’s dubious fast count, Kalel emerged victorious, claiming both the DTown Lucha Libre and Texas Latino Comic Con Championship belts to become a double champion. The rudo celebration turned vicious as Don Money, La Seguridad, and El Chapin unleashed a brutal beatdown on the fallen Aski.
The heel dominance was cut short when two of Aski’s dedicated students, El Gran Destructor and Mario, charged in to chase off the rudos, turning the tide and earning cheers from the audience. In a poignant moment, Aski addressed the gracious crowd with a heartfelt apology for his loss, vowing that the night’s injustices would not go unpunished. “I will return,” he promised, “and I will not be alone this time.”
Texas Latino Comic Con 2025 wasn’t just a convention—it was a lucha libre saga come to life, blending heartfelt tributes, artistic inspiration, and in-ring intrigue. With new rivalries ignited and champions crowned, fans are already buzzing about what’s next for Aski, El Chapin, and the ever-evolving world of Texas-based wrestling.
