The Capitanes basketball team in Mexico City is part of the NBA‘s G-League with big dreams of becoming the very 1st NBA team to be part of the league from south of the U.S. border. Fans in Mexico City have been attending games for many years now and the team continues to grow in popularity.
In recent years, the quality of play from the team has gone up to where attending a Capitanes game has become part tourist attraction and this has lead the team to want to find ways in which to enhance the experience by adding some authentic Mexican cultural elements to their events.
And for this, they called on the Universal Lucha Company. Recognized as one of the premiere lucha libre promotions in the Mexico City area, the Capitanes have had guest appearances by roster stars Canek Jr., Ciclone Ramirez Jr., Brazo de Oro Jr., and more. The team’s latest event featured the legendary Octagon and his son, Hijo del Octagon and an announcement of a long term relationship between the NBA G-League team and the lucha libre company.
In speaking with representatives from the Capitanes, their feeling was clear – while the team is bringing the NBA and pro basketball to Mexico, they wanted their events to have unique cultural elements of Mexico in their buildings as well – a best of both worlds approach.
The company has made an excellent selection in teaming with Universal Lucha Company. While there are more than 20 independent lucha libre companies in and around Mexico City, Universal events often feature main events with many of the biggest names in the entire sport and have a quality to them which, if viewed by visitors to our country would do an excellent job of showing the culturally unique aspects that separate lucha libre from the types of wrestling which foreign visitors may be used to.
In the three years ahead the Capitanes plan to continue to have special guest appearances from Universal Lucha Company stars and most importantly have Universal Lucha Company special performances before and after select games in order to share the cultural institution of lucha libre with the fans in attendance. And, much like the Capitanes have dreams of moving up from the G-League to the primary NBA league as the first team with a home base in Mexico, Universal Lucha Company has dreams of being able to team with a promotion in the United States and bring authentic lucha libre events, not only matches but a full immersive cultural experience, to fans in the U.S.
