Everything has a beginning sports fans. Some things start with TNT and slightly expensive PPV; others start with a revolt. The latter was Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, which started after CMLL booker and CMLL top star Konnan, fed up with the politics going on at Arena Mexico, left lucha libre’s premiere destination to form their own promotion with the backing of Televisa. And thus AAA was born 27 years ago today with a five match card in Veracruz.
The show came only a week after Peña announced the formation of AAA on May 7th, a move that was nearly a half a year in the making after Peña realized his vision wouldn’t be carried out in CMLL. The five match card is notable for not including Konnan; according to a story about the show on Luchawiki (written by Dr. Lucha Steve Sims), CMLL owner Paco Alonso prevented the top star from appearing after retaining Konnan’s work permit while trying to deport him (only in lucha!). Despite this the show was said to be strong, opening up with Dr. Maldad and Mr. Maldad defeating Quarterback and Super Bowl (yes, those were real luchadores!) in the first ever AAA match and climaxing with Los Hermanos Dinamitas (Cien Caras, Máscara Año 2000 and Universo 2000) defeating El Fantasma, Máscara Sagrada and Perro Aguayo Sr. in the first ever AAA main event. The loaded card would also feature a who’s who of lucha royalty such as the first wave of mini-estrella stars (including the first Mascarita Sagrada), Winners (the future Abismo Negro), Fuerza Guerrera, Octagón, Angel Azteca and the original La Parka.
Lucha Central would like to wish a Happy 27th Anniversary to AAA!
