September 21st has long been the unofficial lucha libre holiday given that it is the date of CMLL (then EMLL’s) first ever show back in 1933. Today the Mexican government decided to make it official. With 341 votes in favor to 51 against (as well as 60 abstentions), the Mexican government voted to make September 21st the official day of celebrating lucha libre and its wrestlers. That’s right; lucha libre now has an official holiday! With the 21st falling on a Saturday this year you can likely expect several big shows in celebration, including one from CMLL in Arena Coliseo.
