It’s been rare this summer for a CMLL Super Viernes to be disappointing, which made last week’s lackluster effort sting all the more. It seems like we can prepare for a bit more stinging this week as well. Don’t get me wrong; this is a far better card than last week, with matches 2, 3 and 4 all having a shot at being incredible. It’s just that the semi-main looks like something I’d watch during a bad movie marathon and the main event is the only the program CMLL has going right now that we all want to end. And yet it won’t. Hence there will be stinging. But enough about pain; there’s good stuff to get to in this preview before all of that!

Kaligua & Stukita vs. Pequeño Nitro & Pierrothito

What to Expect: I know what you’re thinking; what the hell is a Kaligua? Is he a big fan of that shitty Malcolm McDonald movie from the 70’s with all the orgies and shit? My guess is it’s probably a luchador in CMLL already getting a new gimmick, mostly because I can’t see any Mini-Estrella outside of CMLL saying “I need to go work for a place who’s Mini-Estrella division is dying a quicker death than Solo: A Star Wars Story at the box office.” I don’t know if it’s Angelito as some seem to believe, but I do think it’s someone we’ve seen before. It won’t make a difference either way; Stukita will still be the most exciting luchador in this match, things will run a little smoother than usual with Pierrothito involved and we’ll still have forgotten this match by the end of the show.

Winners: It’s not Lucha Underground so the the “debuting” Kaligua will emerge victorious here with Stukita in three falls.

Black Panther, Blue Panther Jr., Guerrero Maya Jr. vs. Okumura, Templario, Tiger

What to Expect: Is it too early for podracing? Wait what am I saying; it’s never too early for podracing!

Image result for now this is podracing gif

On the one hand you can take this match as a bad thing because it’s pretty clear CMLL is filling Puma’s spot with Templario, which seems to indicate Templario’s chances of moving on up are, at best, on hold. On the other hand Black Panther, Junior, Maya and especially Tiger will be happy about this because Templario is unbelievable and should have no problem delivering the same type of excellence Puma did on a consistent basis. His presence alone in this match makes it more appealing than if Kawato had been in his place. It’s probably too early on the card to truly stand out as great but come on; when the worst guy in your match is Okumura (who is giving you the same, solid if unspectacular performance every time) you know you’ve got something.

Winners: It feels like it’ll be a good night for the rudos. They take it in three after Okumura pins Junior and Templario pins Black Panther.

Soberano Jr., Titán, Valiente vs. Cuatrero, Forastero, Sansón

What to Expect: If the last match was podracing, this is Nathan Drake exploring Shambala at the end of Uncharted 2. The only thing I’m upset about is how long it took CMLL to finally put Soberano and the Dinamitas back together again. You’ve got one guy who has great chemistry with three of your best young rudos (in particular the best of the group Sansón) and you don’t pair them off? That be like CMLL not putting Soberano and Fenix against each for Fenix’ entire CMLL run and, oh wait a minute, THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT CMLL IS DOING AS WE SPEAK!

Keep it together Cult; there’s time for that match to happen later. As far as this match goes it should very easily be spitting hot fire. Soberano and the Dinamitas always seem to bring out the best in each other. Valiente is always reliable in matches like this and may be ready to bust out the Valiente Special after keeping it in the bag for the Tag Team Title match a few weeks ago. It’s almost a luxury for this match to have Titán in it with those other five, and that’s a hell of a luxury considering Titán (along with Tritón) carried a match careening off the rails back to respectability just a week ago. There’s absolutely no reason this match shouldn’t be great and I anticipate it will be.

Winners: This is one of them “could go either way” deals so that can mean only one thing; BREAK OUT THE CANADIAN DOLLAR! Heads technicos, moose rudos…and its heads! The technicos take this in three falls.

Lightning Match

Carístico vs. Cavernario

What to Expect: I know everyone is still impatiently waiting for CMLL to stick Carístico in there with either Dragón Lee or Pentagon (the latter which hasn’t happened due to Pentagon’s wacky schedule), but this is a pretty damn good consolation prize as far as things go. Obviously there’s always the chance Carístico and Cav don’t click, they don’t get enough time or something goes wrong from a health standpoint but beyond that, this has great written all over it. Hell we recently saw both these guys deliver the goods in singles action (Carístico against Lee, Cav against Fenix) and the styles mesh well here much like they did in those two matches. So yeah; this should be a doozy. Hopefully CMLL gives them close to the full ten to work their magic, although knowing them they’ll give this only seven minutes because of course this match would get less time than that miserable Cuatrero-Mephisto Lightning Match from last week.

Winner: A lot of people are expecting Cavernario to lose this match. I’m not one of those people. It very easily could happen and Cav does seem to lose all these big time bouts but I just got a feeling this will be the rare occurrence where he takes home the W. He defeats Carístico in about eight and a half minutes with La Cavernaria.

Atlantis, Diamante Azul, Volador Jr. vs. Bestia del Ring, Rush, Terrible

What to Expect: Oh look; Diamante Azul is back.

And he’s paired with Bestia del Ring again.

I’ll admit; I would laugh very, very hard if this match proved to be the start of a build between Azul and Rush for the Aniversario. I would be laughing in between violent, angry tears mind you but still; you have to find humor in stupidity like that. Luckily that won’t be happening, which means this match more or less exists to be a mediocre ten minutes where Bestia stinks everything up, Azul does a few things to remind us he isn’t as bad as I’m making him out to be here, Rush and Volador go through the motions, Terrible stares people down and we all wish Atlantis would take time off so he could get healthy again. And that sports fans is the story of the CMLL Super Viernes semi-main.

Winners: The technicos take it in three falls clean.

Ciber the Main Man, Scharly Rock Star, The Chris vs. Euforia, Gran Guerrero, Último Guerrero

What to Expect: I was looking forward to this match this week because I, like so many others, foolishly thought this would be a Trios Championship match between the two teams that would end this rivalry. Guess what; it’s the day before the show as of this writing and this match is still non title. You know what that means? That’s right; we’re going to be doing this all over again more than likely two weeks from now.

Actually it could even be next week considering how CMLL is loading up the Negro Casas Aniversario like a Star Destroyer, but for the sake of argument let’s just say two weeks. Either way I must ask, WHY?! I have nothing against the effort Klan Kaoz has put into the previous two matches and I certainly know what the Guerreros are capable of. But I think we’ve all seen enough at this point to know, regardless of the UG, Big Euf and GG’s ability and Klan Kaoz’ effort, that these matches have reached their ceiling and that ceiling is “average with a side order of LET’S JUST MOVE ON!”. Making this match non title to build to another bout not only makes me less interested in this match, it makes me less interested in the title match, especially since it looks to be following what might be the show of the year. Le sigh. Hopefully CMLL does change this to a title bout in the next day because otherwise I don’t really care. What a pity.

Winners: As there is no title match set up yet I can only assume Ciber, Scharly and The Chris are winning again unless CMLL has completely pulled the plug. I seriously doubt that, so look for the rudos to take this again in three falls. At least we have the undercard sports fans; at least we have that.

That’s game everyone. I’ll see you tomorrow for a review of the show. TILL THEN!
