It was CMLL night in Arena Puebla. One of these days it will hopefully  not be so we can all escape these lukewarm shows. If you missed tonight’s riveting spectacle, here’s what happened.

Astro & Meyer defeated Joker & Sombra Diabólika two falls to one after dueling submissions. Astro had a couple moments of brilliance, but otherwise this was the usual slog of an opener in Puebla. Someone get Astro out of there post haste!

Espíritu Maligno & Toro Bill Jr. defeated Asturiano & Millenium two falls to one. This match was so boring that I saw the finish to the match happen, and yet cannot remember what it was. Well done CMLL! The only thing of note in this match otherwise was Toro Bill Jr. using Último Guerrero’s Pulpo Guerrero submission, which either means Toro Bill and the UG are good pals or Toro Bill will be joining Rey Apocalipsis in the land of “CMLL luchadores never to be seen again.”

Drone, Fuego, Tigre Rojo Jr. defeated Disturbio, Policeman, Virus two falls to one after Fuego pinned Disturbio with a Victory Roll and Drone pinned Virus with his headstand corner knee attack. Respectable effort, though not enough happened to make this a good match. This was one of the occasions where Tigre Rojo Jr. was allowed to cut loose and hit a dive, thus making it one of his best performances in awhile. Everyone else was solid but unremarkable.

Marcela defeated Metálica two falls to one to retain the CMLL World Women’s Championship. The finish came after Marcela pinned Metálica after a Double Stomp. The match featured the hilarity of Marcela’s daughter Skadi seconding Marcela and Marcela’s boyfriend Tyson La Bestia seconding Metálica; wonder who has pull in Arena Puebla these days! That silliness aside the match was pretty good. There was one weird communication era near the turnbuckle during fall two but otherwise Metálica came across really well, Marcela worked hard and they put together a solid match. I can’t imagine many CMLL luchadoras matches topping this, although that’s mostly because I can’t see CMLL doing that many singles matches for luchadoras.

Atlantis, Diamante Azul, Soberano Jr. defeated Gran Guerrero, Hechicero, Último Guerrero two falls to one after Atlantis pinned the UG with a Hurricanrana Roll Up. Diamante Azul replaced Atlantis Jr. because we cannot have nice things. Other than that the match was fine. Everyone was in neutral with the exception of Soberano, who had three straight thrilling sequences in fall three with the UG, Gran Guerrero (who he hit a pop up Dragonrana on) and long time foe Hechicero. It’s almost like he’s really good or something!

Ephesto, Mephisto, Volador Jr. defeated Carístico, Cuatrero, Sansón two falls to none after Volador pinned Carístico with a Small Package following a mask pull. This match was quick and mostly painless, other than that lame ending to surely set up Carístico vs. Volador next week. At least I think that’s we’re there going given Carístico’s challenge afterwards. Hopefully that match goes better than the last two main events have.
