Tonight’s CMLL Puebla show was very much a CMLL Puebla show. This is to say almost nothing of note happened and only one match was slightly worth your time. Never change CMLL; never change. If you missed all this while watching WWE cool their NXT Invasion angle after only a few days (apparently), here’s what happened!

Espíritu Maligno & Joker defeated Astro & Asturiano two falls to one after Maligno submitted Astro and Joker submitted Asturiano. Acero and Mercurio were supposed to be in this match but were nowhere to be found. A depressing match. Astro has been terrific in these Puebla openers recently, which I guess was the wrong move on his part as CMLL gave him nothing to do in this match and had him go out with a whimper. Asturiano fared no better and the rudos were as bland as Styrofoam boards. Do not watch this match unless you want to feel bad about yourself.

Akuma, Espanto Jr., Espíritu Negro defeated Millenium, Rey Samuray, Tigre Rojo Jr. two falls to one after Akuma pinned Rojo after powerbombing Millenium into Rojo while Negro submitted Millenium. A slightly less depressing match than the last one, largely because Akuma worked hard. Yet again though it felt like a match where the technico team got very little to do and the rudos overall did nothing interesting.

Dulce Gardenia defeated Misterioso Jr. in a Lightning Match via submission. This was okay, largely because Dulce Gardenia is very good and very charismatic. This wasn’t his best work and good Grodd someone needs to tell him to never do a suicide dive again, but he was a lot of fun overall and worked hard to get the most out of this match. Misterioso added nothing, but he also didn’t get in the way or mess anything up, which is progress for him these days. I’ve seen better, but I’ve seen worse.

Star Jr., Stigma, Valiente defeated Rey Bucanero, Templario, Vangellys two falls to one after Stigma pinned Vangellys and Valiente submitted Bucanero. Star Jr. and Stigma replaced Diamante Azul and Flyer respectively. This was noteworthy for Star Jr. doing a cool suicida senton towards the end of the match where the rudos messed up the set up, followed by Templario just barely catching him. If Star Jr. had any luck he’d have no luck at all. The rest of the match was by the numbers. Star Jr. and Templario worked pretty good together and everyone else went through the motions.

Ephesto, Hechicero, Mephisto defeated Ángel de Oro, Niebla Roja, Soberano Jr. two falls to one after Mephisto submitted Niebla Roja. Not that this was a high bar to clear but this was easily the best match on the show. It wasn’t earth shattering but it was really well worked and made the most of the situation. Mephisto and Niebla Roja did well together (although it appears that isn’t going anywhere), Ephesto didn’t get in the way, Oro was solid and Hechicero and Soberano Jr. were terrific, especially together. Why CMLL won’t give us another singles between those two is beyond me. They were the high point of this match and helped elevate it.
