There will be a new Mr. CMLL this year when the Bodybuilding Contest rolls around. Last year’s Mr. CMLL and former CMLL World Mini-Estrellas Champion has left the promotion and will be appearing tonight at the first Gladiators: Liga de Campeones de Lucha Libre show featuring talent from AAA, Aro Lucha, Impact, Lucha Libre Elite and MLW, according to Apolo Valdes. Reports are now coming in that he has defeated Relampago in his first match, a battle in the competition’s Welterweight Division.

The 30 year old luchador had been a CMLL lifer, debuting for the promotion back in 2009. He spent the first eight years of his career as a Mini-Estrella, before switching the regular divisions in January of 2017. Despite a 864 day reign as Mini-Estrellas Champion (a title he only lost upon moving up a division), Astral never moved out of the opening match blocks, a trend that continued once he moved up a division. He instead became best known for dominating the CMLL Bodybuilding Contest, winning the Advanced Category twice (in 2013 and 2015), the Mini-Estrella category once (in 2009) and winning Mr. CMLL just last year. Astral also wrestled for Lucha Libre Elite during their CMLL association in 2015 and 2016, allowing him to easily slide in as a representative of the brand for this competition. There is no word yet on if Astral has signed with AAA, Elite or any other promotion.
