I’m very hesitant to say what I’m about to say sports fans. After all, last week’s AAA show (Guerra de Titanes) looked like a strong show on paper and it ended up being just kind of okay thanks to some weird booking decisions and a crowd that would’ve been dead for the resurrection of El Santo. It just goes to show you there is no guarantee of a good or bad show, no matter how the card looks on paper. And yet here I am, about to tell you that tomorrow’s AAA show in Xalapa, Veracruz (home of Lucha Underground ace Pentagon Dark!) looks like a really good show. And I mean come on; it totally does. Aside from the main event and maybe, MAYBE the opener (which is only a question mark because no one knows who is who) the card looks can’t miss. The second match looks good; the Aerostar-Monsther Clown match is intriguing; the semi-main should be very good; and holy hell that third match! How could one not be excited for this show? I understand that I’ve probably jinxed things and the show will be like the final thirty minutes of Sunshine come tomorrow night but that’s for then. For now, let’s drop the cynicism, hope for the best and get really excited about this Yvonne Strahovski looking show. TO THE PREVIEW MOBILE!
La Parkita, Mini Gronda, Mini Psycho Clown vs. La Parkita Negra, Mini Monster Clown, Mini Murder Clown
What to Expect: I honestly have no unearthly idea what’s going on here sports fans. Of course no one should because the only luchador in this match I’ve actually seen wrestle recently is Mini Psycho Clown; the rest of these dudes are either luchadores AAA hasn’t used since the original Charmed was airing or (and this is my guess) are new guys being put into new gimmicks. If that’s the case then a) I hope AAA hired Mascarita Dorada to be one of them and b) I hope they didn’t hire the original Mascarita Sagrada to be one of them. Either way this will be an interesting match just to see what sort of rabbit AAA pulls out of the hat.
Winners: A match with only one noteworthy luchador? This is the type of match the coin of Canada was made for. Heads technicos, Moose rudos…THE RUN OF MOOSES IS OVER! Must be because this is an AAA preview instead of a CMLL one. In any event, the technicos will win this match.
Dinastia, Lady Shani, Niño Hamburguesa vs. Black Danger, Lady Maravilla, Último Maldito
What to Expect: Its three talented technicos going against three talented rudos for ten minutes, give or take; how do you think it’s going to play out? The only reason I’m not as excited for this match as other ones is because those other matches are a) that much more exciting or b) involve Aerostar. Otherwise this is about that will feature a great pace, work perfectly for someone like Hamburguesa (who’s very talented but works much better in trios action than singles, as his Lucha Capital run can attest to) and will allow Lady Shani and Lady Maravilla to mix it up with others instead of showcasing their non chemistry against each other. As long as Último Maldito doesn’t spend five years trying to find a chair under the ring to do his usual Brillo Dorada, this should be a lot of fun.
Winners: I could see Maravilla’s team winning to set up Shani vs. Maravilla, but AAA seems to have more confidence in Keyra as a Shani opponent and, unfortunately, we’ve seen enough Shani-Maravilla bouts to know those two don’t quite mix. Thus I’ll go with the new Reina de Reinas Champion to lead her team to victory, followed by Keyra coming out for a challenge or possibly even Taya. I know a subtle tease when I see one sports fans and that Taya-Shani moment on Lucha Capital this past Wednesday was just that. It’s going to happen; it’s just a question of when.
Hijo del Vikingo, Laredo Kid, Myzteziz Jr. vs. Australian Suicide, Jack Evans, Taurus
What to Expect: Let’s be real sports fans; the Luchador Sorpresa is Myzteziz Jr., anyone who saw him win the Trios Championships with Laredo Kid and Vikingo last week knows that and this whole Luchador Sorpresa thing is just to shock the Xalapa fans when the new Myzteziz comes out. That’s all there is to that. Now that we’re done with the annoying stuff, let’s get hyped over what will be the best match on the show, potentially one of the best matches of the year and my spirit animal. Sorry The Good Place.
I’m not joking sports fans. In the words of Tama Tonga introducing Taiji Ishimori, LOOK AT THIS! Not only has the Vikingo/Laredo/Myzteziz alliance of awesome (I’m personally calling them Die Young and Save Yourself) been a guaranteed hit every time they wrestle but they’ve found an opposing trios team that’s just as crazy as them! And it’s all happening just days after Laredo Kid and Australian Suicide had the lucha libre equivalent of a hockey fight crossed with a Mad Max film this past Wednesday on Lucha Capital. I can’t wait to see those two go at it again, I can’t wait to see Vikingo, Myzteziz and always entertaining Jack Evans try to top each other with crazy dives and I REALLY can’t wait to see what all three technicos do with Taurus, a man who could catch any move. I frankly wouldn’t be surprised if Jack betrayed his own team just to try a crazy dive onto Taurus. This isn’t just a must see match; this is a stop what you’re doing, cancel all your plans and make sure the Twitch stream is on so you can watch this match. You won’t want to miss it.
Winners: If this were CMLL the new Trios Champions would lose. Luckily this is AAA, which means Die Young and Save Yourself is winning this after Laredo Kid hits a Laredo Fly on poor Suicide to avenge his Wednesday loss. Yes I am going to keep pushing that Die Young and Save Yourself name until its official dammit. If AAA can keep trotting Imposter La Parka out to give these guys new gimmicks then I can keep pushing the name!
Bull Terrier Match
Aerostar vs. Monsther Clown
What to Expect: I’d probably be even more excited for this match if I knew just what the hell a Bull Terrier match was. Is it just a fancy way of saying it’s a Bull Rope match? Is it a match with bulls, thus allowing Aerostar the opportunity to do a dive off said bulls?! Alright it’s definitely not the latter, but whatever it is has me a little uneasy. Aerostar is at his best when he’s able to move around freely against a guy who can base for his out of this world offense. Now he may be chained/tied up with a dude in Monsther Clown who is an iffy base and an iffier luchador; the only matches I’ve seen him in recently that were good were the four way cage match at Heroes Inmortales and that four way tag team title match at last year’s Triplemania. And those only worked because of Psycho Clown (Heroes Inmortales) and everyone in the match who wasn’t Monsther Clown (Triplemania)! This match is definitely a bigger opportunity for Monsther to strut his stuff but unlike former pal Murder Clown I’ve seen nothing, and I mean nothing, to suggest there’s a good worker waiting to be unleashed. And yet…this match has Aerostar, one of the most creative luchadores alive and a dude who has made this feud (which has basically been Monsther attacking Aerostar and our favorite ancient alien time traveler returning the favor) watchable because he’s in it. If anyone can come up with creative ways to make a Bull Terrier match with Monsther Clown exciting, it’s that man. I’ll be excited to see this match just based on what he can possibly do.
Winner: Even if I didn’t love Aerostar and loathe Monsther Clown I would still pick Aerostar. He’s the younger, bigger star who can still go places should AAA ever get around to giving him a major push. Look for him to pull this with a Springboard Codebreaker at around thirteen minutes.
Averno, Chessman, Super Fly vs. Carta Brava Jr., Mocho Cota Jr., Tito Santana
What to Expect: Remember when these two teams had several matches against each other earlier this year and all of them were really, REALLY good?
Honestly sports fans, I’m not that excited for this match and I’m not sure why. I think, like the second match, it may just be my excitement towards Aerostar’s big singles match and that mouth watering trios match in the three slot that is keeping me from focusing too much on the rest of these bouts. Whatever it is doesn’t change the fact that this should be a splendid match. As stated, all the matches between Los OGT’s and Poder del Norte earlier this year were good to great (their Verano de Escandalo match in particular was sublime) and it’s not like they’ve slowed down any since. Other than their bizarre Lumberjack match at Triplemania Los OGT’s have maintained a great deal of momentum (including in singles action as both Averno and Chessman have looked good the past two weeks on Lucha Capital), while Poder del Norte has pretty much cranked out a good to great trios match every show. I don’t know if these teams will go as far down the root of ultra violence as they did earlier this year but even if they don’t this should be a really fun, really good brawl between two units that know how to throw down.
Winners: Los OGT’s was clearly set up as the next challengers for Die Young and Save Yourself at Guerra de Titanes and, most importantly, they’ve pretty much had Poder del Norte’s number this year. Thus look for Averno, Chessman and Super Fly to pick up the W on their rivals after nearly fifteen minutes.
Dr. Wagner Jr., Pagano, Psycho Clown vs. Blue Demon Jr., Killer Kross, Rey Escorpión
What to Expect: Another AAA show, another main event that’s likely to be the worst thing about said show. Such is life when LA Park decides to take a breather from being the man I suppose. I do at least like that AAA is trying to make this better by adding Rey Escorpión, a guy who could make any situation work, to the fray. Unfortunately they’ve also added Pagano to the fray and that, along with Dr. Wagner mailing it in and Blue Demon Jr. being Blue Demon Jr., should be enough to cancel out any bad assery from Killer Kross, any greatness from Escorpión and any epicness from Psycho. Such a shame because you know Psycho will do EVERYTHING in his power to make this match great because it’s the only thing he knows how to do. Maybe we’ll get lucky, Wagner, Demon and Pagano will get taken out before the match and it can just be a two on one handicap match of Kross and Escorpión beating up Psycho, who keeps fighting back against all odds? Now that would be a main event. Make it happen Konnan!
Winners: Blue Demon keeps winning these matches in order to build to whatever AAA is building to between him and Wagner and I don’t see that changing now. Look for the rudos to take this after a very long match.
That’ll do it sports fans. I’ll be back later tonight for a CMLL Live Review and you’ll see me tomorrow for a review of this show. TILL WHENEVER!
